Munich 2008

We stayed one night in Munich en route to Prague, then a weekend and three more days between Prague and Brussels, both stops at Hotel Holmes. In the three days we visited Fossen and Neuschwanstein.

Before we set to Bavariating, we caught up with the most excellent Herr Holmes.

He lives in a charming and central part of Munich. It is on all the main S-bahn lines, and is the "Italian quarter" of the city. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants.

There is also this very nice shop just around the corner near the Ostbahnhopf that sells things bahnfahrt-ish.

Munich is very picturesque, and we did a lot of walking through cobbled streets, pleasant parks, past things Bavarian.

The Deutches Museum was a truly wonderful place. This photo of a Messerschmitt ME262 was instantly recognised by Edwin when sent back to NZ.

Our host was able to point out the fine details of the mock-satellite in the courtyard. "I want a camera like that but all I have is this miserable little thing!"

Munich is pretty green. OK, it was fall, but the place was not short of trees either deciduous or evergreen.

From the air it looks oddly like a German model layout. I guess it is German model layouts that look like Bavaria, but the extent to which it all looks that way was surprising.

Ever noticed how there is always a church in those tiny villages on the train layouts? Well, there was pretty much a church in every little Bavarian Hamlet over which we flew.

Naturally the trains run with deadly precision.

While there we are visiting also the castle of King Ludwig. This man had taste in castles, mad or no.

It seems to be quite the thing to paraglide over the castle. We saw lots of sails in the skies above. Must be a bugger to get snagged on the pointy bits.

The artful shot below is an attempt to conceal the fact that the side of the castle was covered in scaffolding the week we were there.

When all is sorted, you can bet better pictures of the place from GoogleImages than you can in person, even without a scaffolding hazard:

The beer is good, though:
